For patients facing a new diagnosis of melanoma or sarcoma, the path from diagnosis to treatment can be confusing and overwhelming. A patient’s life and sense of normalcy are altered as soon as the news is delivered.
That is where I step in as the melanoma and sarcoma oncology nurse navigator. I am there to help my patients understand their diagnosis and treatment options, coordinate care and ensure they feel supported every step of the way. I guide them through the healthcare system, collaborating closely with them, their families and the multidisciplinary team, ensuring they receive timely, personalized care.
My goal is to make an otherwise complex healthcare journey easier to navigate and less overwhelming. Here are some examples of what the oncology nurse navigator adds as a member of the patient’s multidisciplinary team:
- Education and Communication: I provide clear, understandable information about melanoma and sarcoma, including treatment options, clinical trials and potential side effects. Knowledge empowers patients to make informed decisions about their care and can ease some of the anxiety that many patients feel during care.
- Care Coordination: For patients who have difficulty coordinating their care, I help schedule appointments, coordinate testing and referrals and communicate with the multidisciplinary team on their behalf. I serve as a source of support and help ensure nothing slips through the cracks.
- Emotional Support: A cancer diagnosis affects more than just the body. Attention must also be paid to the patient’s mental health. I listen, answer questions and connect patients with resources, such as support groups, counseling and educational programs, to help them manage the emotional challenges that accompany a cancer diagnosis and treatment.
- Advocacy: I advocate for each patient’s individual needs, ensuring their voice is heard and that barriers to care — financial concerns, transportation or scheduling conflicts — are addressed promptly to avoid delays and interruptions in care.
Being an oncology nurse navigator is about more than managing appointments or explaining treatments. It is about building trust, providing guidance and helping patients feel empowered and supported. No patient should feel lost or alone in their fight.
Having worked in oncology since 2003, I have had the privilege of caring for patients during some of the most challenging times in their lives. I do my part to ensure that Northside Hospital’s melanoma and sarcoma patients have a partner in care from the moment of diagnosis, bringing clarity and compassion to their journeys.
