Northside Hospital Cancer Institute is expanding access to cancer care through its longtime partnership with Georgia CORE, a statewide nonprofit dedicated to reducing the burden of cancer through research, education and advocacy.

Georgia CORE — the Center for Oncology Research and Education — connects Georgia’s cancer research, academic and patient advocacy communities to increase access to clinical trials, new treatments, screenings, preventive services and survivorship resources.

For more than 20 years, Northside has worked with Georgia CORE to expand access to these resources, particularly in under-resourced and underinsured communities.

“Northside Hospital Cancer Institute is proud to be a partner of Georgia CORE,” said Dr. Guilherme Cantuaria, chief of oncology at Northside Hospital and past Georgia CORE board member. “Together, we are working to ensure that every Georgian — regardless of geography or income — has access to the latest advancements in cancer care.”

Georgia CORE serves all Georgians, with a focus on providing cancer care access to those with limited resources or insurance. It provides education on screenings and preventive services and operates the state’s only online cancer information center, with details on oncologists, clinical trials, treatment centers and resources.

Key outreach programs include:

  • Georgia Cancer Trial Finder (GCTF): Helps providers, patients and care partners locate the closest open clinical trial.
  • Genetic testing partnership: Since 2012, Georgia CORE has worked with the Georgia Department of Public Health to identify women at high risk for breast and ovarian cancer and provide free genetic testing for those who qualify.

Georgia CORE also funds community nonprofit organizations offering education and screenings for lung, breast, cervical, colorectal and prostate cancers.

“Georgia CORE’s mission aligns perfectly with our own,” Dr. Cantuaria said. “By combining our strengths in research and community outreach, we’re able to reach patients who might otherwise be left behind.”

Northside is also a key partner in Georgia NCORP (NCI Community Oncology Research Program), led by Dr. Cantuaria and supported by Northside’s cancer research team. Together, Northside and Georgia CORE recruit and work with affiliate sites statewide to expand access to clinical trials and improve cancer care delivery.

Northside leaders serve on Georgia CORE’s board and advisory committees, reinforcing the shared commitment to cancer prevention and treatment.

“Georgia CORE and Northside share a commitment to improving cancer care for all Georgians. Their doctors and administrators have been with us since we started in 2003 and have never wavered in their support for our mission,” said Lynn Durham, president and CEO of Georgia CORE. “Georgia CORE would not have the reach and impact it has today without Northside Hospital.”

“Northside’s commitment to Georgia CORE is more than a partnership — it’s a shared vision for a healthier Georgia,” Dr. Cantuaria added.

Georgia CORE invites volunteers to serve on advisory committees supporting research, education and advocacy. The organization also encourages Georgians to learn about state and federal cancer resources — and to advocate for greater access.
