Cardiac arrest can strike anywhere — at work, at the gym or even on the sidelines of a child’s soccer game. In those critical moments, survival often depends on the actions of an everyday bystander. That reality is why Northside Hospital is deeply committed to the American Heart Association’s goal of doubling survival of out‑of‑hospital cardiac arrest by 2030. Together, they are advancing the Nation of Lifesavers, a nationwide movement to ensure everyone, everywhere, is empowered to act when every second counts.
Turning awareness into action
Funds raised by the American Heart Association through campaigns like the Atlanta Heart Walk fuel this lifesaving mission. Because of this support, more people in our communities are gaining the skills and confidence needed to step in during a cardiac emergency. These efforts help:
- Expand CPR training and awareness.
- Provide lifesaving education to Georgia high school students.
- Increase access to automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in local businesses.
- Strengthen cardiac emergency response plans across schools, worksites and public spaces.
Northside Hospital has recently deepened its commitment by supporting initiatives focused on ensuring more women receive bystander CPR — a critical need, as men are currently 23% more likely than women to survive cardiac arrest when CPR is provided.

These investments are creating communities where ordinary people become extraordinary lifesavers.
Working together to build preparedness
“Northside Hospital’s dedication goes far beyond participation,” said Jessica Martinez with the American Heart Association. “By championing CPR education and a culture of readiness, they’re helping ensure more people are prepared to save a life when seconds matter.”
Why CPR matters
- Bystanders are the first responders. Immediate CPR can double or triple the chance of survival.
- Anyone can learn CPR. It doesn’t require medical training—only the willingness to act.
- Prepared communities save more lives. When more people know what to do, more families stay whole.
Walking toward a safer future
Every year, hundreds of Northside Hospital employees and their families participate in the Greater Atlanta Heart Walk — an event that not only raises funds but accelerates a movement. By walking, they help ensure more people in our community are equipped with the lifesaving skills needed during a cardiac emergency.
“Northside Hospital Heart Institute is proud to join the American Heart Association in building a Nation of Lifesavers. Because a cardiac emergency can happen anywhere, survival often depends on the actions of an everyday bystander,” said Billie Slinde, vice president of service lines, Northside Hospital. “By supporting CPR education, increasing AED access and participating in key events like the Heart Walk and Go Red for Women, we are ensuring Georgians have the tools and confidence to save lives.
“Together, we are building a healthier, more prepared community.”
As we look ahead to the 2026 Atlanta Heart Walk, Northside Hospital remains steadfast in its commitment to building a stronger, safer, more prepared community — one where more people step forward, take action and truly become the help when it matters most.
Together, we’re creating a future where CPR skills are common knowledge, lifesavers are everywhere, and every second counts.
