Explained: Fall prevention

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 1 in 4 older adults reports a fall each year. In this video, Dr. Francisco Echevarria-Santiago, a primary care physician with Northside Decatur Primary Care, discusses fall prevention.

Exercising — such as gait and balance training, strength training, tai chi, dance and aerobics — is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of falls and injuries.

You should also discuss with your physician your medications and look for opportunities to identify and modify, if possible, any medications that carry a greater fall risk, such as benzodiazepines and antidepressants.
