Explained: What is cardiac arrest?


According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 356,000 cardiac arrests occur outside hospitals each year, and about 7 in 10 happen at home.

Cardiac arrest is an event in which the heart stops beating and pumping blood to the rest of the body. It can result from a heart attack, but cardiac arrest is not the same as a heart attack.

Cardiac electrophysiologist Dr. Thomas Middour of CardioVascular Group, affiliated with Northside Hospital Heart Institute. explains the causes of sudden cardiac arrest.
