Northside 101: Prostate cancer basics

Prostate cancer is a very common disease. About 333,830 new cases of the disease are estimated in the United States for 2026, according to the American Cancer Society.

In this video, Dr. Crain Garrot, a board-certified physician in medical oncology, hematology and internal medicine at Georgia Cancer Specialists, explains that the most common symptom of prostate cancer is no symptoms at all. Most men are asymptomatic when they are first diagnosed. Those with a family history of prostate or breast cancer and Black men are at higher risk for developing prostate cancer. Current screening recommendations call for these men to be screened at a younger age.

Northside 101 is a series in which Northside Hospital experts break down complex medical terms and procedures. Watch to learn more about prostate cancer, including risk factors, symptoms, and how it is found and treated.
