Robotic Surgery

If you've been diagnosed with a condition requiring surgery, robotic surgery at Northside Hospital may be an option.

For many procedures, your surgeon may be able to perform your operation using robot-assisted surgery, which combines minimally invasive techniques with advanced surgical visualization and instrument control.

Since 2005, Northside Hospital has built one of Georgia’s most experienced robotic surgery programs, bringing together a multidisciplinary team of experienced robotic surgeons with specialized expertise in bariatric, cancer, gastrointestinal, gynecologic and urologic care.

What is robotic surgery?

A surgical robot does not make decisions or perform surgery on its own. During a procedure, our surgeons are always fully in control. They stand or sit at a console in the operating room, guiding slender, specialized instruments that translate the surgeon's hand movements into precise, controlled movements inside the body. These instruments can bend and rotate in ways the human hand can't, and high-definition cameras magnify surgical areas that were previously difficult to view with traditional techniques.

This technology allows Northside surgeons to work more easily in small or hard-to-reach areas. And because these instruments are so thin, our surgeons can operate through just one or a few small incisions instead of one large opening.

Depending on your condition and overall health, robot-assisted surgery may allow for:

  • Reduced postoperative pain
  • Shorter hospital stays and recovery time
  • Quicker return to normal daily activities

Why choose Northside Hospital for robotic surgery?

Patients facing complex conditions benefit from the experience of dedicated robotic surgeons who perform advanced procedures every day.

Home to one of the nation's highest volume robot-assisted surgery programs, Northside Hospital has built one of Georgia’s most experienced robotic surgery teams, performing more than 10,000 robotic procedures every year across multiple specialties.

Our program combines:

  • Highly experienced robotic surgeons
  • Dedicated robotic operating room teams
  • A multidisciplinary approach to complex care
  • Comprehensive care before, during and after surgery

With 32 robotic systems, including 28 da Vinci® surgical robots and four Ion bronchoscopy robots, across seven locations, Northside Hospital gives patients throughout the Atlanta region convenient access to advanced robotic surgery closer to home.

This includes two outpatient locations, in Midtown and Sandy Springs, making Northside the only hospital system in metro Atlanta to offer robotic surgery in the outpatient setting.

Advancing robotic surgery in Georgia

For more than 20 years, Northside has helped lead robotic surgery innovation in Georgia through groundbreaking procedures, advanced technology and surgical firsts.

Our numerous clinical milestones include:

  • First robotic-assisted bladder removal for cancer in Georgia in 2007
  • First single port robotic radical cystectomy in Georgia in 2023
  • First robotic radical hysterectomy in Georgia in 2010 after having performed less invasive robotic-assisted hysterectomies since 2005
  • First Single-Site™ robotic gallbladder removal in Georgia in 2012
  • First use of the Flex® Robotic System on the Southeast coast for transoral procedures in 2016
  • One of the nation's largest Aquablation® therapy programs since 2018 and became first in the world to offer the therapy using the AI-powered HYDROS™ Robotic System for enlarged prostate in 2024

From first-in-state robotic procedures to the latest generation of robotic technology, Northside Hospital continues to advance surgical care — giving patients access to innovative treatments from experienced robotic surgeons.
