The Northside Hospital Cancer Institute (NHCI) Liver & Pancreas Program provides comprehensive care and surgical treatment for tumors of the pancreas, liver, bile ducts, and gallbladder, as well as complex cancers of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract including the stomach, small intestines, retroperitoneum, adrenal glands, and appendix. We evaluate and perform robotic and open surgery for pancreatic cancers including adenocarcinoma and neuroendocrine tumors, high-risk pancreatic cysts, hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma, gallbladder cancer, and patients with stage IV colorectal cancer with liver and/or peritoneal metastases.
The NHCI Liver & Pancreas Program is a high volume, nationally recognized hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgery program. Our Pancreatic Cancer Program is a National Pancreas Foundation (NPF) Center of Excellence, which is awarded to premier health care facilities that focus on the multidisciplinary treatment of pancreas disease, treating the “whole patient” with a focus on the best possible outcomes and improved quality of life. Northside is one of two NPF Centers of Excellence in Georgia.
We utilize state-of-the-art techniques that lead to increased survival outcomes, decreased hospital stays, and low complication rates. For example, prior to major liver surgery patients undergo evaluation of their liver volumes and function, and some will be recommended to undergo liver augmentation procedures such as portal vein embolization to help augment growth of the remnant liver. We perform pancreatectomy with vascular resection as needed, and have one of the lowest post-operative pancreatic leak rates in the country. We offer surgical microwave ablation and irreversible electroporation for local treatment tumors that cannot be removed. Our minimally invasive robotic surgery program is among the busiest in the Southeast and includes robotic partial pancreatectomy, splenectomy, liver resection, and total and distal gastrectomy. Finally, we offer tumor debulking and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for peritoneal metastases.
Our HPB and complex GI surgical oncology team consists of Eddie K. Abdalla, MD, FACS, the Medical Director of the Liver and Pancreas Program, Malini D. Sur, MD, FACS, the Medical Director of the Atlanta Liver and Pancreas Surgical Specialists, and Dr Atuhani S. Burnett, MD, PhD, FACS. All are nationally recognized HPB-focused surgical oncologists with a high level of experience and expertise in their field. They work as a team with many other specialized physicians including medical and radiation oncologists, interventional gastroenterologists and radiologists, hepatologists, GI pathologists, and body imaging radiologists. They are also well supported by highly trained advanced practice providers, experienced oncology dietitians, nurses, and staff in a comprehensive multidisciplinary clinic as well as in the perioperative setting within the hospital.
